Is it better to invest in a faster machine tool or a more stable one?
\nLet me share our experience. As with any experience, this is not intended to be presented as an absolute truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not long ago, someone asked me what technological trends I was seeing in the industry. The truth is that<\/p>\n

I am not seeing groundbreaking innovations so much as a continuous stream of small, incremental improvements. These changes may appear insignificant on their own, but together they make a substantial difference. One area where we have noticed meaningful progress is machine rigidity. In many cases, improved rigidity increases overall productivity far more than higher operating speeds ever could.<\/h2>\n

Why compare these two aspects? Because for many years the machine tool industry has promoted operating speed as a key selling point. In my opinion, beyond a certain point, this marketing approach risks becoming a technical mistake.<\/p>\n

Think about buying a sports car or a high-performance motorcycle. Many purchasing decisions are influenced by top speed or acceleration, even though those figures are rarely used in real life. You may own a car capable of 300 km\/h, but if the speed limit on the motorway is 130 km\/h, you might be tempted to exceed it briefly, but that’s about it.<\/p>\n

The comparison is not identical with machine tools, but the principle is similar.<\/p>\n

Running a packaging or assembly line at its maximum speed at the expense of stability often forces operators to slow it down anyway, simply to avoid costly machine downtime.<\/p>\n

On the other hand,<\/p>\n

a more rigid machine delivers lower vibration levels, longer tool life, fewer interruptions, and ultimately lower production costs. It also improves process reliability, reducing the need for quality inspections and further lowering manufacturing costs.<\/h2>\n

Some years ago, we had to choose between two similar CNC lathes from two different manufacturers. One offered higher operating speed; the other emphasized greater structural rigidity.<\/p>\n

After a careful evaluation, we chose the second machine.<\/p>\n

We found that, when machining the same component, the faster machine sacrificed stability and wore out cutting tools more quickly. As a result, operators had to stop production more frequently to replace tooling. Although the faster machine produced more parts over the course of a single day, by the end of the week the more stable machine had actually delivered the higher overall output.<\/p>\n

The takeaway?<\/p>\n

Based on our experience, a machine tool that is fast but not stable can easily become the wrong investment.
\nFor this reason, my advice is not to be overly impressed by spectacular productivity figures alone. Instead, insist on accepting the machine only after practical testing has demonstrated that it remains stable under the promised operating conditions.<\/span><\/h2>\n

As the saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.<\/p>\n
