As an entrepreneur in the mechanical engineering sector, I cannot help but notice that we are working in markets that are becoming increasingly complex, where competitive dynamics evolve far more rapidly than they did in the past. Cost structures, supply chains and even the perception of quality are undergoing profound changes.
\nTake Chinese competition, for example. It is no longer a marginal phenomenon but a structural component of today’s industrial landscape\u2014one that European manufacturers must learn to understand and compete with effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are witnessing an industrial balance that is being reshaped day by day.<\/h2>\n

This transformation extends well beyond mechanical engineering and affects the entire European manufacturing sector, with the automotive industry providing one of the clearest examples. Rather than being a temporary trend, it represents a fundamentally different way of doing business\u2014one that requires a thoughtful and realistic response.<\/p>\n

There are recurring situations that many manufacturers have probably experienced.
\nSometimes the same component is installed on two identical machines\u2014one built ten years ago and the other recently\u2014and the older machine continues to operate flawlessly, while the newer one begins to experience problems after only a few months. <\/span>Has this ever happened to you?
\n<\/span>We experienced exactly this with a small hydraulic cylinder on one of our machine overturners: the same brand and the same model, yet very different results in service.<\/span><\/p>\n

This suggests that many manufacturers, under increasing pressure to reduce costs, may be making compromises in areas such as materials, heat treatments or surface finishing. On the surface, the components appear identical. In operation, however, their performance can be significantly different.<\/p>\n

Little by little, this phenomenon is changing the very perception of product quality.<\/p>\n

In my opinion,<\/p>\n

this is also why the distinction between a European supplier and an Asian supplier has become much less clear than it once was.<\/h2>\n

When companies traditionally associated with high quality begin to show inconsistencies, sourcing from alternative suppliers naturally becomes a more attractive option.<\/p>\n

This is not intended as criticism but simply as an observation. As quality differences become less evident, price inevitably regains its position as the primary purchasing criterion. At that point, technical expertise, supply chain transparency and the ability to assess the true value of a product become increasingly important.<\/p>\n

One episode particularly caught my attention during the latest EMO exhibition in September.<\/p>\n

While presenting a new machine, EMAG openly stated that it is manufactured at their production facility in China.<\/p>\n

Personally, I see nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, if the machine delivers the expected quality and its price reflects its manufacturing context, I believe it is the right approach to communicate this openly.<\/p>\n

At a time when globalization and manufacturing relocation are widely discussed, transparency can become a genuine competitive advantage. Rather than concealing industrial decisions, it explains them\u2014and over time, that builds trust.<\/h2>\n

This leads to what I believe is the key point:<\/p>\n

the alignment between where a product is manufactured, the value it delivers and the price at which it is offered is becoming increasingly important.<\/p>\n

If a European manufacturer decides to relocate production to China while continuing to market the product at a traditional European price, local Chinese manufacturers will inevitably gain a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n

We have already seen this pattern emerge across numerous industries\u2014from professional lighting components to electric pruning tools. Manufacturing moves abroad to reduce costs, local producers begin manufacturing comparable products at substantially lower prices, and within a few years the competitive landscape changes completely.<\/p>\n

The direction of travel now seems clear.<\/p>\n

We are entering increasingly complex markets and a new global industrial equilibrium in which Asian\u2014and especially Chinese\u2014manufacturers are a permanent part of the competitive environment.<\/p>\n

This is not a reality to fear, but one we must address with realism and clear strategic thinking.<\/p>\n

The challenge is not how to avoid competition, but how to remain relevant as the market continues to evolve.<\/h2>\n

That means continuing to invest in engineering expertise, manufacturing quality, technical competence and the ability to understand\u2014and clearly communicate\u2014the value we create.<\/p>\n

Because, ultimately, competitive advantage depends less on where a product is manufactured than on how it is designed, produced and supported throughout its lifecycle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
